Last night I watched the movie Hunger, directed by Steve McQueen.
I was very shaken up after the movie and couldn’t stop thinking about it. Not only was the movie intensely filmed but it showed me things I’ve never quite reacted to before due to my ignorance of exactly how recent happenings like this have happened.
The movie is based on protests from IRA militants in the 1980’s which inevitably lead to Bobby Sands going on a hunger strike (as well as ten other prisoners), a very painful and agonizing death that he strongly felt was necessary for change.
Hunger strike is a non-violent resistance to provoke guilty emotions, proven more powerful than protesting with violence, which is incredibly sad but admirable. Several people died during the Anglo-Irish War in the 1920’s while on hunger strike but it goes as far back as the days of St. Patrick.
I highly recommend watching the movie, it will move and inspire a desire in you to understand how much humans are worth. A community, rights and lives are worth fighting for.
I also recommend watching the german film Goodbye Lenin! (my favorite film) for a different perspective on the impact the Berlin Wall had and sadly, how recent it was torn down.
